Kashmiri Chain Stitch Embroidery – Intricate craftsmanship that turns fabric into timeless art
Kashmiri Chain Stitch, or Jalakdozi in its native name, is an old embroidery method from the Kashmir Valley. Characterized by flowing, interlocking stitches, this embroidery produces stunning designs based on nature, Persian designs, and motifs. In contrast to normal embroidery, this method employs a running stitch, creating the designs smooth and almost like painting.
The technique is done using a unique hook named Aurah, which the artisans employ to embroider on hessian fabric or hand-spun cotton fabric. The outcome? Beautiful, handmade pieces that reflect the artistic excellence of Kashmiri artisanship.
What Makes Kashmiri Chain Stitch Unique?
Each Kashmiri Chain Stitch creation is a labor of love, crafted using a meticulous step-by-step process:
1. Fabric Choice
The embroidery is performed on quality cotton, silk, or velvet, selected for its capacity to add depth to elaborate patterns.
2. Transfer of Design
Classic designs—paisleys, florals, and complex nature-based designs—are manually traced onto the fabric prior to embroidery.
3. Aari Embroidery
Artisans use a hooked needle (Aari) to make looped stitches that run smoothly across the fabric, creating beautiful, raised designs.
4. Final Touches
The last fabric is washed, stretched, and finished to make it durable. These embroidered items are then molded into cushion covers, table runners, table covers, sheer curtains, and heirloom rugs.
