In 14th century Kashmir, kar-i-qalamdan–the art of making ornate pen cases–was introduced by Iranian artisans accompanying the Sufi saint Shah-e-Hamadan. They came to be used to decorate wooden doorframes and wall panels.

The story behind the commonly used name–Papier mâché (French for mashed paper)–goes back to the 19th century when luxurious cases made in this style became popular across Europe through French traders of Kashmir’s coveted shawls.

Artist
Hakim Gulam
Kashmir
Hakim Gulam started his practice at the age of 15, which brings his work experience to 45 years and counting. His speciality is working with real gold, presently done by only a few artisans in Kashmir. Although his repertoire consists mainly of old-age replicas of Papier Mâché designs, his ability to innovate when given ideas is unmatched. He has attended several workshops and exhibitions across India, with a few of his workshop-cum-exhibitions being conducted in Germany and Sri Lanka. He has worked on the JK Artisan Map as well.
