Size
34.7 x 45.3 cm
This painting is a reproduction of a Mughal miniature from the Badshahnama, a body of work commissioned by Shah Jahan (mid-17th century). The original folio is at the Royal Library, Windsor Castle, United Kingdom.

Shah Jahan is seen receiving the Persian ambassador, Muhammad Ali Beg, during celebrations of Nowruz (Persian New Year) in 1631 at the Diwan-i-aam in Burhanpur, present-day Madhya Pradesh (the centre of Mughal authority in the Deccan). The painting depicts courtiers dressed in finery and Persian present-bearers, recognisable by their distinctive turbans.
