Karimnagar Silver Filigree
Sammohana Thali
Telangana
Size
33 cm dia (Plate)
This ceremonial ensemble is a magnificent testament to the finesse of Karimnagar silver filigree—a craft with regal roots tracing back to the royal courts of the Nizams of Hyderabad. Steeped in the cultural opulence of the Deccan and the symbolic richness of Indian wedding rituals, this piece is a rare confluence of tradition, artistry, and innovation.
Drawing inspiration from the musical instruments traditionally played during wedding ceremonies, it reimagines them as functional ritual vessels, each imbued with purpose and poetic symbolism:
The Veena, reinterpreted as an elegant rose water sprinkler
The Tabla, designed to cradle haldi and kumkum, signifying purity and prosperity
The Shehnai, fashioned as a vial for attar (perfume), evoking fragrant blessings
The Mridangam, transformed into a container for akshata—turmeric-tinted rice used in sacred blessings

These exquisite components are thoughtfully arranged on an ornate silver thali, forming a cohesive and visually striking ceremonial set. The ensemble radiates quiet sophistication, with its fine wirework, rhythmic symmetry, and delicately balanced proportions.

Each element is entirely handcrafted and fully functional. More than a decorative object, this work is a living embodiment of Indian matrimonial traditions—where music, scent, colour, and sacred ritual merge into a graceful expression of union.
