Traditional Persian Gwalior Wool Hand-Knotted Carpet

An ivory hexagonal medallion, packed with fine floral detail, sits at the centre of this carpet's red field, blue corner spandrels holding a pair of birds facing each other among the branches. A wide navy border, dense with its own floral repeat, frames the whole design, closed at both ends in a plain wool fringe. A Gwalior weaver hand-knots the wool close enough that the birds in each spandrel stay clearly drawn against the surrounding vine work. There is something formal about a red this structured, medallion and spandrels all answering to the same centre point. At six by nine feet, it suits a room on its own, and dark wood or navy-toned furniture both sit well against the red, calm beside the birds.
