THE CRAFT

Thushi

From the state of Maharashtra
Maharashtra
Kolhapur is a city in the southwestern region of Maharashtra. It lies along the banks of the river Panchaganga and to the east of the Sahyadri mountain ranges. While the Kolhapuri chappal (slipper) is famous, their jewellery with its delicate embossing and craftsmanship is equally exceptional. The Kolhapuri Thushi deserves a special mention. It's one of the lightest neckpieces, worn like a choker.
Heritage Value
These are made from tiny gold round beads of varying sizes and meticulously interwoven in 22K gold. They can be drawn with an adjustable dori (thread). Thushi is a Maharashtrian bride’s ornament, worn on her wedding day. Like most Maharashtrian jewellery, Thushi bears Marathi and Peshwa influences. The gold beads are intricately arranged and filled with wax. Amongst notable Thushi necklace styles is the Gadi Thushi, where gold beads are strung together and then stitched onto traditional red fabric. This backing gives the shape a firm form, besides giving the necklace durability.
Memory Vault
The Thushi haar (necklace) has been created keeping in mind the quintessential bride. Made up of closely stacked golden beads, the myth around the haar, views these beads as closely resembling jowar seeds. There's belief and goodwill that the bride’s new home will always be blessed with food.
