Thappa

From the state of Rajasthan
Rajasthan
Thappa jewellery, created by placing precious stones or old-cut diamonds (polkis) between thin layers of gold foils, was introduced in India by the Mughals and later patronised by the Rajputs. These collectible pieces of art are entirely handcrafted with real diamond polkis, set in a gold foil of high purity, typically 23K
Heritage Value
Unlike Jadau technique, Thappa jewellery utilises a thin high-purity gold foil instead of a solid lattice. First, the artisans beat the gold into thin sheets or foils. These foils are then set to shape, forming the base structure of the ornament. Once the shape is achieved, the setting undergoes a chemical wash to eliminate any impurities. After drying, the gems are placed on a gold sheet using a tree sap called laakh or "lac" to stick them in place. They are then arranged in the gaps between the stones, and additional layers are added to create a sturdy frame. Once the stones are securely set, the gold is lightly heated to create smooth edges.
Memory Vault
The design techniques of Bandhai, Jadau, and Thappa were recently employed by Rahul Luthra, Creative Director of Raabta by Rahul. He helped adorn the character played by actor Kangana Ranaut in the horror film Chandramukhi.
