THE CRAFT
Peepal Patti
From the state of Punjab
Amritsar, Punjab
Peepal Patti is a delicate style of jewellery from Punjab, specifically famous around Amritsar. The recurring motif in the designs are the leaves of the Peepal, a deciduous tree found commonly in the northern belt of India. Peepal Patti has a distinctive design where the shape of Peepal leaves are developed into stylized patterns. It is lightweight, highly artistic, and entirely handmade.
Heritage Value
Peepal patti jewellery is an integral part of every Punjabi festival, wedding, and auspicious family events. The tradition is believed to be over two centuries old. Early practitioners were patronised by the royal family of Patiala. This is why it also carries forward the heritage of the erstwhile royal state of Patiala. The jewels are made in 22K and 24K pure gold. A wafer-thin layer as delicate as 0.8mm covers the surface of this jewellery. The heart-shaped Peepal Patti is interpreted for necklaces, maang tikkas (head ornaments), and other traditional Punjabi designs like passas, lotan, and bahi. Sometimes, this exquisite work is done in combination with other precious stones like rubies, emeralds and pearls. Other gold designs include jali (lattice), meena (enamelling), and gold chitai (hammering and embossing).
Memory Vault
Peepal Patti jewellery forms an integral part of the costume of female bhangra dancers.
