THE CRAFT
Paper Jewellery
From the state of Puducherry
Auroville, Puducherry
The township of Auroville near Puducherry in Tamil Nadu is known for several uniquely contemporised traditional handicrafts. They include handmade paper used to create jewellery, along with artwork, posters, and stationery. They use a blend of paper handicraft and pearl fabrication.
Heritage Value
The experimental international township of Auroville in Viluppuram district has its own handmade paper production unit. Launched in 1996, Auroville Papers now also uses extra fabric from garment factories to create paper jewellery. Women constitute 70 percent of the staff. This handmade paper is used to craft jewellery. Strips of handmade paper are rolled into different shapes using a coiling technique. The light, eco-friendly style is used to make earrings, bracelets, and necklaces, available in red, blue, orange, green, and rust.
Women from Auroville’s nearby villages are trained in handmade paper-making with cotton rags, vegetable fibre, and recycled paper. They have become a part of this jewellery crafting process. It's a part of the branding identity of Auroville in design and retail, visible in their pottery, incense, clothes made from natural fabrics, and organic products.

Memory Vault
Auroville also has Wellpaper, which was rolled out in 2005 as a tsunami rehabilitation initiative. This helped support women to design accessories using recycled paper and non-toxic dyes. Here, "well" is short for Women Empowerment through Local Livelihood.
