THE CRAFT
Navratna Jewellery
From the state of Rajasthan
Jaipur, Rajasthan
Navratna jewellery gets its name from the use of nine gems, combined with precious metals to make ornaments. Each gem symbolises a celestial body, imbuing the jewellery with spiritual significance. The craft also showcases the exquisite artistry of the jewellers of Jaipur.
Heritage Value
Jaipur has been a flourishing hub for gem traders and skilled jewellery artisans for centuries. Royal patronage has played a pivotal role in popularising the tradition. Gems are also important in astrology; it is common for people to wear such jewels for good fortune and wellbeing.
Navratna jewellery conventionally features nine gems: ruby (symbolising the Sun), pearl (Moon), red coral (Mars), emerald (Mercury), yellow sapphire (Jupiter), diamond (Venus), blue sapphire (Saturn), hessonite (Rahu), and cat’s eye (Ketu). Various Indian religions hold these nine gems in special regard.
The piece in gold or silver, would feature a ruby (sometimes a red spinel) at the centre, referencing the Sun. It's encircled by the other "celestial" gems. This precise arrangement mirrors the cosmic alignment of the Navagraha Yantra.
Navratna gems are most commonly seen in rings and necklaces. Artisans also add to the design with intricate stone settings, delicate filigree work, and elaborate designs.

Memory Vault
Navratna jewellery is a big hit among celebrities. Bollywood actors Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol, and Hrithik Roshan have been spotted wearing Navratna amulets. A striking example of a Navaratna necklace comes from the collection of the former queen consort of Thailand, Sirikit, whose necklace was created by American gemologist, Richard Shaw Brown.
