THE CRAFT
Kachchh Wood Carving
From the state of Gujarat
Kachchh, Gujarat
Wood carving from Kachchh is defined by the cultural identities of desert tribes across the Thar region. In fact, the wood carvings from Sindh in Pakistan, Barmer and Jaisalmer in Rajasthan, and Kachchh reflect similarities of art and craft and cultures. The wooden designs are also evocative of those found in embroidery and mirror work.
Heritage Value
While wooden carving began in the 12th century, the most notable works were crafted in the 18th century. One can visit the Aina Mahal in Bhuj and notice the intricate inlay door. This was commissioned by Rao Lakhpatji, the erstwhile ruler of Kachchh. The Gurjar carpenters of Gujarat and the Marus of Rajasthan were brought to Kachchh. Together with the Hindu Suthars from Sidhpur, they worked on wood carvings using the local babool wood. These artisans worked on balconies, façades, pillars, doorways and windows, pigeon houses, as well as intricate columns. They expertly chiselled motifs of flowers, birds, animals, and human figures.
Artisans use chisels, hammers, saws, and hand-turned lathes, besides polishing techniques, to craft these remarkable pieces. Examples can be seen in Ludiya village in Bhuj. Across Kachchh, several old and new houses, miniature temples, and architectural spaces feature extraordinary wood carving.

Memory Vault
Some craftsmen specialise in creating wooden items coated with silver and adorned with mirror work. These are highly sought after globally. While rural craftsmen make this, carved wooden furniture and intricate wooden pillars are used in some of the most palatial homes and spaces across the world.
