THE CRAFT

Jodhpur Leather Craft

From the state of Rajasthan
Jodhpur, Rajasthan
Jodhpur’s leather craftsmanship, particularly the iconic mojari, offers a captivating look at the blue city’s vibrant cultural heritage. Generations of the mochi (cobbler) community have specialised in this craft, transforming it into a wearable work of art with worldwide acclaim. The tradition has stood the test of time with great significance in fashion today.
Heritage Value
Distinct features of the Jodhpuri mojari include meticulous craftsmanship and attention to detail. The artisans use goat leather for uppers and buffalo leather for soles. The process involves weaving, punching, studding and sewing techniques.

Artisans shape the footwear using a three-piece wooden last, or the copy of a foot. They skillfully stitch the leather together with thick cotton thread. Artists spend days painstakingly adorning uppers with chain-stitch embroidery, silk threads, beads and appliqué work. The insoles also feature embroidery, often through cut-out motifs, underlaid with contrasting coloured leather. For the lower part of the sole, artists offer stitched or cut-out motifs. All these patterns tell unique stories, often inspired by nature, mythology and local traditions.
Memory Vault
Authentic mojari patterns make no distinction between the left and right foot. Remarkably soft, these shoes can be easily rolled up or folded. Their upward-curled toe-ends resemble the twirled moustaches of Rajput men.
