THE CRAFT
Jawaja Dhurrie Handloom
From the state of Rajasthan
Rajasthan
Jawaja, renowned for its leather craftsmanship, is also famous for its jute dhurries. These are reversible flat-weave rugs or mats. The history of this handloom goes back to the Rural University Initiative, a collaboration between the Indian Institute of Management and National Institute of Design Ahmedabad in the mid-1970s.
The dhurries feature distinctive designs and colours that reflect the essence of the village surroundings. Each dhurrie is collaboratively crafted by skilled artisans and designers.

Heritage Value
Jawaja's dhurries are mainly used to adorn floors or serve as doormats. They can also be found as wall hangings and decorative pieces. The timeless designs from the 1970s are still sought after today. The unique wool used in these dhurries is free from excess oil usually found in sheep wool from damper climates. These creations often have small, knotted tassels at the edges. The tassels are meticulously made using both uncoloured and dyed wool.
Memory Vault
The craftsmen of Jawaja till 15-20 years ago lacked the means to engage with contemporary buyers. However, their products have now gained international acclaim, extending beyond occasional local exposure. OXFAM, among other international buyers, has been a consistent supporter of their crafts for nearly 15 years.
