Dharmavaram Handloom

From the state of Andhra Pradesh
Dharmavaram, Andhra Pradesh
Dharmavaram in Andhra Pradesh is renowned for its resplendent hand-woven mulberry silk pattu saris. These feature contrasting pallus and opulent gold brocade borders. They contrast and match the opulence of Tamil Nadu's Kanchipuram tradition.
Heritage Value
Several books, like Saris: Tradition and Beyond by Rta Kapur Chishti and Martand Singh, explore the connection between Dharmavaram and Kanchipuram. Dharmavaram saris are handwoven on a pit loom or a frame loom with two jacquards. They feature animal, bird, and floral designs, along with architectural temple motifs from the Lepakshi Nandi Temple of Hindupur. Their opulent borders are then embroidered with pure zari work. The double-shaded saris are used to make attire for Bharatanatyam and Kuchipudi performaces. Dharmavaram saris are also the preferred attire for other ceremonial occasions. Bridal saris stand out in shades of yellow and maroon.

An authentic Dharmavaram sari must be crafted on a pit loom, with specific two-ply or three-ply silk. They must feature handwoven motifs, pure zari, and the use of the kuttu technique to join the pallu.
Memory Vault
A popular story about Dharmavaram saris mentions Kriya Shakthi Vodavaru Swamy from the 12th century. He is believed to have established the village on the banks of River Chitravathi dedicated to his mother, Dharmamba. Hence the name "Dharmavaram" for the village.
