THE CRAFT

Badroom

From the state of Rajasthan
Rajasthan
Badroom is an intricate jewellery technique known for its signature jaali or lattice-like patterns created in 22-karat gold. A refined and highly skilled craft, Badroom is deeply inspired by the geometric and floral motifs seen in Mughal architecture—especially the ornate marble lattice windows (jaalis) that adorn palaces and mausoleums across North India.

Brought to India by the Mughals, Badroom was originally used as a delicate detailing method to enhance the visual richness of Jadau jewellery, especially on the sides and back of larger pieces. Over time, artisans in Rajasthan and Gujarat perfected the technique, transforming it into a stand-alone artistic expression. Each Badroom piece is created by hand—fine threads of gold are painstakingly shaped into symmetrical patterns and embedded with natural gemstones or uncut diamonds to heighten their beauty.

While traditionally treated as an embellishment, Swadesh has given Badroom a new identity—as a hero craft in its own right, not just an accompaniment. The result is a unique line of jewellery that balances heritage with modern luxury.
Heritage Value
Rooted in the Mughal aesthetic of refined ornamentation and architectural grandeur, Badroom represents a high point in the evolution of Indian jewellery design. Historically, it was practiced by skilled Sunar (goldsmith) communities who inherited their craft through generations and worked exclusively for royal families or patrons of the arts.

The jaali technique, once confined to palace walls and marble screens, found its way into miniature forms through Badroom. Its gold lattices echo centuries of Indo-Islamic design, with motifs that reflect harmony, symmetry, and divine proportion.

In an age where handcrafted jewellery faces competition from mass production, Badroom stands as a rare art form that demands time, patience, and absolute precision. Each piece can take weeks to complete and is often made by a team of artisans working in perfect coordination.
Memory Vault
Badroom jewellery has long been associated with heirloom pieces passed down in royal and aristocratic families—often hidden treasures kept safe in velvet-lined boxes, brought out only for the most special occasions.

For some, the memory of Badroom is in the soft clinking of gold bangles worn by a grandmother or the light filtering through a carved window in a haveli, mirrored in the lattice of a pendant. Today, as these designs are reimagined for the contemporary wearer, they carry not just the glow of gold and gemstones, but stories of dynasties, devotion, and the timeless hand of the artisan.
