Tussar Silk’s Timeless Elegance

Nature’s golden weave, rich in heritage and artistry

Silk comes in many forms, with seven main types known worldwide. Among them, Tussar Silk, also called Kosa Silk in Sanskrit, stands out as a yarn in India with a rich 4000-year-old history. Often referred to as golden silk, tussar exhibits a unique two-toned effect, blending a warm golden hue with natural variations, making it a prized possession in the world of textiles.

By the way, Did you know?

India takes the prestigious position as the world's second-largest silk producer after China.

The 4000-Year Journey of Tussar Silk

Tussar silk is produced mainly in six Indian states including Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Bihar, West Bengal, and Assam, also known as the Tussar Belt. This fine silk is produced from special silkworms (Antheraea mylitta and Antheraea proylei) that are nourished on leaves other than mulberry. Notably, the color of the silk depends upon the diet and climatic conditions, imparting a distinct personality to every weave.

But How to Identify Pure Tussar Silk Sarees?

1. Imperfections Mean Authenticity: Unlike machine-made fabrics, tussar silk features natural irregularities in its weave and color. These subtle variations are proof of its handwoven origins.

2. The Weight Test: Tussar silk has a coarser texture and a slightly heavier feel compared to mulberry silk. Holding a piece of tussar will reveal its distinct weight and texture.

3. Price Factor: Since it is rare and a complex process in its production, tussar silk tends to be more costly than other silks. Similar to Kanjivaram silk, tussar silk also possesses identification techniques, unlike others.

4. The Burn Test (Handle with Care!): Genuine tussar silk, when incinerated, produces minute ash and has a slight organic odour, as opposed to synthetics, which melt and have a plastic-like odour. Nevertheless, the test should be performed carefully and only as a final measure.
