Step into Tradition, Walk with Legacy

The Heritage of Kolhapuri Leather Craft

Kolhapuri leathercraft is a centuries-old tradition that embodies the artistry and dedication of skilled craftsmen. Dating over 800 years, this craft flourished under the patronage of the Chalukya rulers and later, Shahu Maharaj of Kolhapur. What started as a necessity evolved into a unique art form, where every cut, stitch, and weave reflects the cultural heritage of Maharashtra. Today, Kolhapuri leathercraft extends beyond footwear, encompassing a diverse range of bags, belts, wallets, and accessories—all crafted using age-old techniques and traditional materials.

Did You Know?

In 2019, the Kolhapuri chappal was awarded the prestigious Geographical Indication (GI) tag, officially recognizing its deep-rooted cultural significance.

Travel the World with Kolhapuri Leather Chappals

The Making

Creating a pair of Kolhapuri chappals is an art in itself. The process begins with natural tanning, which gives the leather its rich texture and durability. Skilled artisans then cut, shape, and hand-stitch each piece with precision. Different villages specialize in distinct styles, like Kanwali, Bakkalnali, Pukari, and Kachakadi—each with its charm. Finally, the chappals are embellished with braided leather strips, zari embroidery, and embossed patterns, making every pair one-of-a-kind.
